The Time Guardians

Book 1. In the Beginning….

Chapter one. Parting ways.

The peace of the hallway at Jensen's High School was disturbed by young mocking female laughter as David was gathering his books from his locker. “Oh look Sharon, it's your geekish admirer! Go on! Give him a smile, your makeup is entire month! Sharon looked at David, she had an image to upkeep and she gave a wide smile at him blew a sarcastic kiss. She pitied him more than anything, he was a geek and unless he shaped up, he always would be. She would tolerate him near occasionally just so that he could be part of the human race and it suited her to be magnanimous towards him. David on the other hand, knew that Sharon was way out of his League and gave a tentative smile in response but in the process, dropped the books that he was getting from his locker. This is the last day of high school and he was due to start college in the Fall. Sharon and he were going to different colleges and he knew that it would be a while before he saw her again, assuming of course, that she wanted to see him! Sharon's entourage burst out laughing as he scrambled to pick up his books, his face bright red with embarrassment. Why was he such a clutz when he was nearby? He wondered. Sharon hesitated for a minute and then dismissed the idea of helping him as it would have ruined her image and so she and her entourage continued down the hallway.

During the course of the day, David courtside Sharon a number of times and wanted to speak with her before school ended and he would lose the chance to say goodbye to her but he wanted to do it privately and without her goons. Finally the bell sounded to signal the end of school and David had still not been able to approach her. As he walked towards the exit, he could see Sharon and her company gathered near the gate and head down he scooted past and headed off down the road. A few minutes later, he heard feet running towards from behind and Sharon's voice calling for him to stop. He paused and waited for her to catch up.

“Hey! You are going to leave and head off to college without saying goodbye? What kind of an asshole are you?” Her tone sounded more hurt than angry.

“I'm sorry, David mumbled, I didn't think you would want to speak with me with your “friends” nearby!

Sharon frowned, “I pick my own friends and if I choose to speak with you then the others can go to blazes if they have a problem! I'm going to business college in the Fall, where are you going?”

“Government services, R&D” David returned but he refused to give any more details. Sharon tried to pressure him for more information but he was tight-lipped.

“Well fine then! If you're going to be all hush hush about it then it's probably just something geekish!” She snapped heatedly and then stalked off. David watched her figure marching off and gave a huge sigh of regret at an opportunity lost.
